Interview with Leonardo Wainer
ISST Media Director**
Interviewer: Vivian Francesco
1. What role do you play on the ISST Board, and what inspired you to take on this position?
For the past two terms, I have served as the ISST Media Coordinator, managing communication between the Board, members, Special Interest Groups, and committees. I also designed and implemented strategic initiatives to disseminate accurate information about Schema Therapy worldwide.
My motivation stemmed from a strong commitment to counteracting misinformation surrounding mental health and Schema Therapy, and from a desire to help ISST expand its global communication network.
2. How did you first learn about Schema Therapy, and what did your training journey look like?
I grew up in a family deeply rooted in psychology and psychotherapy. My father—one of the earliest advanced-level Schema Therapists in Brazil—was a profound influence on my professional path.
A defining moment came in 2011, when Wendy Behary attended a conference hosted by our institute. I had the opportunity to assist in the translation of her book into Portuguese, which deepened my connection to Schema Therapy.
3. What do you envision for the future evolution of Schema Therapy?
Schema Therapy stands at a pivotal stage of growth. I believe the future depends on:
expanding rigorous research,
strengthening its evidence base,
enhancing clinical efficacy,
and broadening its global impact in psychotherapy.
4. How do you enjoy spending your free time, and how do you get into your “Happy Child Mode”?
My answer is simple: playing tennis with my daughter, Alexandra.
Our weekly matches bring joy, connection, and a moment of pure presence.
5. Any final thoughts you’d like to share with the ISST community?
As my current term comes to an end, I want to express heartfelt gratitude to the ISST community. The past years have been both challenging and deeply rewarding, and I am proud of what we have accomplished together.
