Don’t miss the International Schema Therapy Webinar and Course for Neurodivergent Clients in September 2024 and January and February 2025.
First of all, being neurodivergent does not mean having a problem. The word neurodiversity, which is the Persian equivalent of neurodiversity (as opposed to neurotypical), is originally a non-medical term that describes and describes people whose brains function differently from other people for some reason. This term was coined by an Australian sociologist named Judy Singer in 1998 to show that people’s brains are as distinct and different as their fingerprints. In fact, neurodivergent in this sense speaks of being different, not of being problematic.
Dr. Olga Dobrushina says about the workshop content: “
On the first day, we will talk about neuroscience concepts that schema therapists can rely on when working with clients with neurodiversity and neurohomogeneity. Moving from understanding to practice, we will learn to conceptualize clients’ problems in terms of brain systems and tailor treatment accordingly.”
On day two, we will delve into the world of neurodivergent thinking to identify and align with ADHD and autistic clients. We will cover topics such as dual empathy, masking, burnout, and phenomena such as crisis, silence, and rejection-sensitive resentment. Cases, video examples, and memes will help us understand the subtle neurodiversity. As good caregivers, we will learn to meet the specific needs of neurodiverse clients, including sensory needs.
Day three is dedicated to adapting schema therapy for neurodiversity clients and is built around two simulated cases. We will protect autistic Mary from a powerful critic and help ADHD Peter learn to regulate himself more effectively from his demanding critic. We will use grounded schema therapy to recognize the counter-mechanisms of multifaceted masks, understanding and meeting the needs behind them. Finally, we will see how happy a neurodiversity child can be when they are seen and supported rather than being turned into a “normal person.”
