By Vivian Francesco

SchemaNews.org is pleased to present an exclusive, interview with Rob Brockman — a prominent ISST figure whose contributions to the global schema therapy community continue to inspire clinicians worldwide.

What role do you have on the ISST board and what made you want to accept that role?
Rob explains that in recent years, after witnessing several challenges faced by the Executive Board, he felt a growing sense of responsibility to contribute. Encouraged by colleagues who believed in his leadership abilities, he accepted the nomination for President with a commitment to help steer the society through its opportunities and challenges.

How did you first learn about schema therapy?
Rob encountered schema therapy during a complex supervision case early in his training. His supervisor recommended Jeffrey Young’s Practitioner’s Guide, which sparked his immediate interest and marked the beginning of his long‑term professional involvement with schema therapy.

Where did you get your training in schema therapy?
His formal training began in 2008 with Chris Lee, followed by additional Mode training with Arnoud Arntz. By 2010, he was fully committed to the model and soon after began his ISST certification pathway.

How do you enjoy your free time?
Rob’s free time is devoted to family, especially weekend activities around his daughters’ competitive basketball schedules. His balance between work and family life is an important aspect of his personal well‑being.

How do you get into your happy child mode?
His happy child mode is activated through playing or watching sports — especially by cheering for Liverpool FC and watching games during early morning hours from Sydney. He also experiences joy through involvement in schema therapy training events, which connect meaningful work with personal fulfillment.
